Steady Leadership, Real Results: Why Otema Brian Tom Is Ready to Transform the ISBAT Guild

I am Otema Brian Tom — the outgoing Guild Representative for the Bachelor of Medical Imaging Technology (BMIT) program and a Semester 7 student at ISBAT University. I also serve as an adjunct representative for the entire Faculty of Health Sciences.

Beyond university, I am a neuroscientist with Africa Innovations Institute and currently cross-training in neuroimaging. My academic and extracurricular life are deeply intertwined — I am an active member of the ISBAT Quiz Club, which recently reached the quarterfinals at the New Vision Inter-University Quiz, marking a remarkable improvement from last year’s performance. I am also a proud member of the ISBAT Tech Club.

Within the medical imaging community, I belong to the Association of Medical Imaging Technology Students at ISBAT University and its sister organization, the Uganda Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy Students Association (UMIRSA). I am equally honored to be part of the Imaging and Radiography Presidents Association and the East Africa Radiography Students Association.

My Leadership Journey

My leadership journey began in high school, where I served as Sports Prefect in IB1 and Class Prefect in IB2 at Aga Khan High School.

I later studied at the University of Sussex in the UK, where I served as a first-year Student Mentor and successfully revived the University of Sussex East African Society, serving as its President. Over the years, I have received several honours and medals for service and leadership.

At ISBAT University, I was elected Guild Representative for BMIT for 2024/2025 and later voted interim Guild Speaker. These experiences have shaped my belief that student representation must be at the core of university life.

My Vision for ISBAT University

I strongly believe that the student guild is the cornerstone of student power in any institution of higher learning. With the right leadership, the guild can smooth difficulties, solve problems, and defend students from actions that undermine their university experience.

As I seek the position of Guild President, my goal is to positively impact the lives of every ISBAT student and ensure that all students have the opportunity to thrive academically, socially, and professionally.

If elected Guild President, I will build a guild that is:

  • Transparent
  • Respectful
  • Genuine
  • Approachable

My Priorities as Guild President

  1. Restore credibility and accountability to the student guild.
  2. Focus the guild’s work on tangible student issues that directly affect learning and campus life.
  3. Use negotiation and constructive engagement with administration as the primary tools to achieve real, lasting results.

Why I’m Running

My motivation comes from the challenges I observed while serving as Guild Representative — including:

  • Lack of initiative within the guild
  • Poor communication with the student body
  • Limited accessibility of the guild office
  • Abrupt event cancellations
  • Weak goal-setting
  • Under-utilisation of funds for extracurricular activities

I have a concrete plan to remedy these challenges and make the guild a body that truly serves students.

My Track Record

  • Expanded the skills lab resources by increasing radiology textbooks (previously, the library had mostly anatomy texts).
  • Distributed anatomical display charts across the skills lab and added two additional skeletons to the lab collection.
  • Coordinated with contacts at Mulago Hospital to secure a Memorandum of Understanding for clinical rotation.
  • Registered and supported the Health Science Stars football team, leading them to victory.
  • Organized an AI in Marketing seminar featuring Mr. Kevin Mulooza, a prolific marketing professional.
  • Donated an X-ray film of ‘tuberculosis’ to the ISBAT skills lab for teaching purposes.
  • Led our student team’s participation in the Family and Health Expo and symposium, producing a promotional video and portraits.
